Get The Facts

  • Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is a progressive, terminal brain disorder that has no known cause or cure.
  • Alzheimer’s can cause memory loss, confusion, cognitive problems like depression and anxiety, and, in later stages, the inability to communicate or care for oneself.
  • Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, certain treatments can help control or delay its symptoms, particularly in the early stages of the disease. New disease-modifying treatments target the potential cause of the disease, not just the symptoms.
  • Alzheimer’s Disease Research, a BrightFocus Foundation program, is funding hundreds of studies worldwide investigating a range of approaches to uncover the root causes of the disease and advance risk reduction strategies, new treatments, and a cure.

Healthy Lifestyle Changes Shown to Help Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk

Lifestyle interventions at all ages have been shown to meaningfully reduce Alzheimer’s risk. These include eating a nutrient-rich diet, exercising regularly, staying socially engaged, maintaining a healthy weight, keeping LDL cholesterol low, and treating vision and hearing loss.
