Newly released research portfolios highlight the 276 biomedical research projects funded by BrightFocus Foundation across 16 countries to defeat Alzheimer’s disease, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

BrightFocus Foundation, through its programs Alzheimer’s Disease Research, Macular Degeneration Research, and National Glaucoma Research, is currently supporting more than 900 scientists pursuing the most innovative methods to diagnose, treat, and prevent these diseases of mind and sight.

The Foundation’s grant awards are selected by its Scientific Review Committee, comprising leading scientists and clinicians who recommend projects reflecting the most cutting-edge and impactful research in the field. This reflects the Foundation’s funding philosophy of following the most innovative and promising ideas and proposals that will further our understanding and advance cures for Alzheimer’s, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

Alzheimer’s Disease Research

With support from Alzheimer’s Disease Research, scientists are tackling the disease from many angles, investigating how complex systems in the body interact with the brain to develop earlier detection strategies and novel treatments. Our 157 active Alzheimer’s grants offer great promise and opportunity to defeat this heartbreaking disease.

Macular Degeneration Research

Macular Degeneration Research is funding 58 research projects on the causes and potential prevention, treatment, and cure of macular degeneration. From studies exploring the influence of early life events, diet, and lifestyle on macular degeneration to a disease-in-a-dish approach to screening for FDA-approved drugs that could be used to treat macular degeneration, we have invested in several promising avenues of research that cover a broad array of innovative scientific approaches.
