Sandra O. Tomé,, PhD

I graduated in Biology (Bsc) and Cellular and Molecular Biology, with a Neuroscience track at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Driven by my passion for science and neurodegeneration research, I pursued a PhD in Biomedical Sciences at KU Leuven, Belgium, where I studied the role of TDP-43 protein in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). During my PhD, I used post-mortem human tissue to investigate TDP-43 proteinopathy in AD and mixed dementia. This work gave rise to three publications in high-impact journals of the field. As of now, I am interested in continuing my research investigating the synergy of tau and TDP-43 proteins in AD and LATE - a recently-described disease entity – using state-of-the art and translational approaches.
