The Future of Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Geographic Atrophy: How Clinical Trials Are Paving the Way

Mathew W. MacCumber, MD, PhD, completed his undergraduate studies at Princeton University and earned his medical degree and PhD at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His retina training was at the Duke University Eye Center when he received the Heed Fellowship and the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship. Currently Dr. MacCumber is a Senior Partner and Research Director at Illinois Retina Associates and Professor and Research Director for the Department of Ophthalmology at Rush University Medical Center. He was the Chair of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Council and a member of the AAO Board of Trustees. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Macular Society and the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) and is a Past-President of the Chicago Ophthalmological Society. He currently serves on the Medical Leadership Board of Retina Consultants of American and the board of the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. He has received the AAO Achievement Award, the AAO Senior Achievement Award, the ASRS Senior Award, as well as two Secretariat Awards from the AAO for Education and Advocacy. He has personally authored or co-authored 50 peer-reviewed articles (overall participated in 183 articles), 11 book chapters, and edited the text Management of Ocular Injuries and Emergencies. He has given 83 invited lectureships nationally and internationally. He has served as Principal Investigator for over 25 multicenter clinical trials. Research interests include pharmacologic, cellular, and surgical treatments for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, epiretinal membrane, retinal degeneration, and uveitis.
