Across the Research Spectrum: 2022 Research Portfolios Now Available
BrightFocus Foundation’s newly released research portfolios highlight the more than 250 active grants across our Alzheimer’s Disease Research, National Glaucoma Research, and Macular Degeneration Research programs in pursuit of discovering cures for diseases of mind and sight.
The Foundation’s grant awards are selected by its Scientific Review Committee, comprising leading scientists and clinicians who recommend projects reflecting the most cutting-edge and impactful research in the field. This reflects our funding philosophy of following the most innovative and promising ideas and proposals that will further our understanding and advance cures for Alzheimer’s, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.
We are deeply grateful to our donors, whose generosity makes it possible to grow our research programs and provide hope to millions of people around the world.
Alzheimer’s Disease Research
Our Alzheimer’s researchers are tackling the disease from many angles, investigating how complex systems (cardiovascular, endocrine, and immune) interact to develop earlier detection strategies and novel treatments. Our 163 active Alzheimer’s Disease Research grants offer great promise and opportunity in fighting this heartbreaking disease.
Macular Degeneration Research
We are funding research projects on the causes and potential prevention, treatment, and cure of macular degeneration. From studies exploring the influence of early life events on macular degeneration to a disease-in-a-dish approach to screening for FDA-approved drugs, Macular Degeneration Research has invested in several promising avenues of research that cover a broad array of innovative scientific approaches.
National Glaucoma Research
As one of the world’s leading nonprofit funders of glaucoma research, National Glaucoma Research has supported nearly $47 million in scientific grants exploring the root causes and prevention strategies and treatments to end glaucoma. Our researchers are advancing newer imaging techniques and strategies for early detection, exploring exercise to slow vision loss, and finding new ways to control eye pressure—taking a 360-degree approach to ending this disease.
