April 30 Chat to Assess Treatment Options

CLARKSBURG, MD—The third in a series of free telephone discussions on vision diseases takes place on April 30, when BrightFocus Foundation presents “Treatments for Macular Degeneration.” A medical specialist will discuss and answer caller questions on treatments for this eye disease that in advanced stages can result in blurred or distorted vision.

The free telephone chat begins at 1 p.m. Eastern (10 a.m. Pacific), on April 30. The featured speaker is Albert O. Edwards, MD, PhD, a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in diseases and surgery of the retina at Oregon Retina, LLP. He will describe current treatments, indicate what therapies may be on the horizon, and answer callers’ questions about options for care.

Macular degeneration, a common disorder among people 60 and older, harms the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision needed to see objects clearly. As many as 11 million people in the U.S. have some form of this disease, and that number could double by 2050.

“Currently there are a limited number of approved treatments for macular degeneration,” says Chat moderator Guy Eakin, Ph.D., BrightFocus Vice President for Scientific Affairs. “Our goal is to help people understand what therapies are currently available, or may be possible in the future based on research discoveries today.”

Callers to the chat will be able to learn from and ask questions of Dr. Edwards.
