Kristen Bowles Johnson, PhD, OD

Kristen Bowles Johnson Ph.D., O.D. is a post-doctoral fellow in the Miller Lab at Indiana University. She received her Doctorate of Optometry and a Masters of Vision Science at the University of Alabama at Birmingham before pursuing fellowships in the Ophthalmic Genetics and Visual Functioning Branch at the National Eye Institute and at Wilmer Eye Institute. Through these amazing opportunities, Dr. Bowles Johnson became passionate about determining retinal structural and functional biomarkers of disease to understand underlying retinal pathology and for use as clinical outcome measures in clinical trials. This passion fueled her decision to pursue a Ph.D. in Physiologic Optics at the University of Houston under the guidance of Laura Frishman to increase her knowledge of retinal function in healthy and disease eyes. After completion of her PhD., she began her post doctorate education at the University of Rochester with Dr. Jennifer Hunter while also serving as an optometrist and the Director of Clinical Electrophysiology (2020-2022) within Flaum Eye Institute. Dr. Bowles Johnson has been awarded the American Optometric Association Ezell Fellowship (2016) and has been the recipient of the NIH loan repayment program 4 times which has been vital to her ongoing research endeavors.
