Vivek Swarup

Vivek Swarup, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at the University of California, Irvine. He earned his B.Sc. in Zoology from Banaras Hindu University, India, his M.Sc. in Neuroscience from the National Brain Research Centre, India, and his Ph.D. in Physiology-Endocrinology from Universite Laval, Canada, where he developed novel TDP-43 mouse models of ALS. He completed postdoctoral training in neurogenetics at UCLA with Dr. Daniel Geschwind, contributing to the AMP-AD and PsychENCODE consortia and applying multi-omic analyses to neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. His laboratory integrates single-nucleus RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, spatial transcriptomics, and whole-genome sequencing to uncover the molecular and regulatory mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s disease, aging, and cognitive resilience. He directs the genomics core of the UCI MODEL-AD consortium and has published in leading journals including Nature Genetics, Nature Medicine, Neuron, and Cell Reports. Dr. Swarup is the recipient of the AFAR Young Investigator Award, the John S. Spice Award in Aging from the Hillblom Foundation, and was named a Dean’s Fellow at UC Irvine. He is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of scientists, currently training nine predoctoral students in experimental and computational neuroscience.
