Biography
Dr. Mark H. Ellisman is a Distinguished Professor of Neurosciences and Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), where he has served since 1977. He is the founding director of the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research (NCMIR), an internationally recognized NIH-supported facility that develops and disseminates advanced imaging technologies for biomedical research. Dr. Ellisman also directs the Center for Research in Biological Systems at UCSD. His pioneering work in three-dimensional light and electron microscopy has enabled multiscale, multimodal investigations into the structure and function of the nervous system. Collaborating with Nobel Laureate Roger Y. Tsien, he co-developed innovative probes for correlated light and electron microscopy, facilitating dynamic studies of neural structures across spatial and temporal scales. Dr. Ellisman’s research has provided critical insights into neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, through the application of cutting-edge imaging techniques. His current projects encompass scalable electron tomography for connectomics and in vivo imaging of mitochondrial function in disease models, underscoring his commitment to advancing our understanding of brain structure and pathology
