Biography
David Attwell, PhD, gained a 1st class degree in physics before doing a PhD in electrophysiology at the University of Oxford. After a post-doc in Berkeley studying the retina, he was given a tenured position at University College London, where he is now the Jodrell Professor of Physiology. He has worked on neuronal and cardiac electrophysiology, visual information processing, the properties of brain glial cells, glutamate transporters and how they reverse in stroke releasing neurotoxic glutamate, brain energy supply, control of blood flow at the capillary level, myelinating cells, microglia, and how vascular dysfunction contributes to Alzheimer’s disease. He was made a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2000 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2001.
