Biography

Dr. Anllely Fernandez is a postdoctoral researcher at Indiana University School of Medicine whose work focuses on the molecular and structural mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, familial dementias, and Down syndrome. With expertise in exosomes, amyloid and tau pathology, and cryo-electron microscopy, her research has led to the discovery of novel amyloid structures in the brain vasculature of individuals with Down syndrome. Dr. Fernandez earned her PhD in Neuroscience from Universidad de los Andes in Chile, where she studied the role of SUMOylation in astrocyte-derived exosomes. As a Latina scientist with Indigenous heritage, she is committed to advancing science while promoting diversity and inclusion. Her long-term goal is to lead a research lab that investigates neurodegenerative mechanisms and fosters the next generation of women and underrepresented scientists in biomedical research.
