Biography
Dr. Revathi Balasubramanian is an expert in ocular developmental biology, neurobiology, glaucoma, single-cell transcriptomics, and mouse genetics. Her research program is dedicated to defining the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate iridocorneal angle development and drive the pathogenesis of congenital glaucoma. A central focus of her laboratory is to understand the development of ocular drainage structures: the trabecular meshwork (TM) and Schlemm’s canal (SC), which reside in the iridocorneal angle of the eye. TM and SC are essential for intraocular pressure (IOP) homeostasis, placing them at the core of glaucoma biology, as elevated IOP is a major risk factor for disease. Importantly, aberrant development of TM and SC is a hallmark of pediatric glaucoma, highlighting a critical need to understand the normal developmental programs governing these tissues and how they are disrupted in disease. Her lab develops novel in vitro and in vivo tools to understand the biology of pediatric glaucoma and facilitate new-age treatment options for pediatric glaucoma patients.
