Biography

Mark Christopher, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology at UC San Diego. Dr. Christopher’s research sits at the intersection of machine learning / AI and ophthalmology, with a particular focus on glaucoma. His work includes AI-based detection of glaucoma from fundus photographs and optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging, structure-function prediction linking retinal imaging to visual field outcomes, and longitudinal models for predicting disease progression. He has also contributed to the development of clinical decision support tools, telemedicine screening systems, and the application of large language models (LLMs) to ophthalmology. Dr. Christopher has (co-)authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and is a recipient of the NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award.
