Black and Hispanic communities face a significantly higher risk of glaucoma and often experience barriers to early diagnosis and treatment. In recognition of National Minority Health Month, UCLA ophthalmologist Dr. Victoria Tseng discusses the latest research on glaucoma disparities, cultural and healthcare barriers, and why early screening is critical to protecting vision.
Dr. Victoria Tseng is an Assistant Professor in the UCLA Department of Ophthalmology, where she specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma and cataracts. Dr. Tseng is committed to the education of future ophthalmologists and is the Program Director for the UCLA Ophthalmology Residency. Dr. Tseng’s research focuses on the intersection of epidemiology, disparities, and population health within ophthalmology. Dr. Tseng was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Task Force for Disparities in Eye Care and has conducted extensive research examining healthcare disparities in the risk factors, diagnosis, and management of glaucoma and other chronic eye conditions. She is a recipient of multiple research grants and honors including the Research to Prevent Blindness Career Development Award, the Research to Prevent Blindness and American Academy of Ophthalmology Award for IRIS Registry Research, and the American Glaucoma Society Mentoring for the Advancement of Physician Scientists Research Grant.
