El glaucoma de ángulo cerrado, el siguiente tipo más común, es un trastorno ocular en gran parte hereditario causado por un ángulo demasiado estrecho del pasaje donde el humor acuoso debería drenar normalmente. Este tipo de glaucoma puede ocurrir de dos maneras:
El tipo crónico progresa lentamente al igual que el glaucoma de ángulo abierto, puede resultar en el daño del nervio óptico.
El tipo agudo (también llamado de ángulo cerrado) comienza súbitamente cuando el flujo normal de humor acuoso entre el iris y el cristalino está obstruido. Esta condición es una emergencia médica y debe tratarse de inmediato. Sin tratamiento, puede producirse ceguera al cabo de uno o dos días.
Hay subtipos de glaucoma, uno y otro de ángulo abierto y glaucoma de ángulo cerrado.
