A Thank You to Macular Degeneration Research Donors for Making Cutting-Edge Science Possible

A special message Charles DeBoer, MD, PhD, assistant professor of ophthalmology at Stanford University and a BrightFocus Foundation Macular Degeneration Research grant recipient.

Hi, I’m Charles DeBoer, a new investigator for BrightFocus Macular Degeneration Research. I’d like to thank the donors for their kind support of our project. Our project involves developing a new micro device for the treatment of wet macular degeneration. There are two things that are novel about this device. The first is that it’s going to provide long-term continuous drug delivery for the management of this disease. To our patients, that could mean providing longer-term therapies and less necessity to see the doctor every month or every couple months for treatment. The second part is directly targeting the sites of new blood vessel growth and this would provide concentrated drug directly to the sites of pathology and not necessarily send drug to other areas which are not needing it as much. To this we have three specific aims. The first one is to characterize and control drug release on the benchtop. The second is to characterize and optimize delivering drug directly to the sites of new blood vessel growth. And the third is in vivo testing. Once again, I’d like to thank our donors so much for their kind support of this project.

Together, We Can Stop Macular Degeneration

As many as 20 million Americans have macular degeneration. Your support helps fund research studies to defeat this disease and provide vital information to the public.
