Biography

Guorong Li, M.D. is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist in China, practicing for 3 years. She moved to the U.S. and received research fellowship training at the NIH in neuroscience and then at Duke with Dr. David Epstein in aqueous humor dynamics. She has authored 56 publications, including 20 as first author. Over the past 13 years, Dr. Li began working as a Research Scientist in the Stamer Laboratory, where she has played a leading role in optimizing novel perfusion and imaging methodologies. Since her arrival at the Duke Eye Center, she has conducted extensive work involving cell and molecular biology methodologies in trabecular meshwork cells. Dr. Li has also conducted multiple experiments involving the use of rodent models for the study of outflow pathway physiology, publishing 29 papers as part of the Stamer laboratory. Her extraordinary surgical skills have been invaluable in developing new methods for targeted delivery of viral vectors to the trabecular meshwork of mouse eyes and the isolation of living cells from mouse outflow tissues for single cell sequencing. Lastly, she pioneered the development of the dexamethasone-loaded nanoparticle model to reliably induce ocular hypertension in mice, without systemic adverse events. Her research bridges basic science with translational applications for glaucoma treatment.
