Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, affecting 80 million people. Half of those impacted by glaucoma may not even know it because it usually has no noticeable symptoms in its early stages.

The most common form of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma, is caused by increased pressure in the eye. If left untreated, glaucoma can cause permanent damage to the eye, which means vision loss cannot be reversed.

“Early detection through a comprehensive eye exam is the only way to check for glaucoma—and the best way to reduce your risk of permanent vision loss,” said BrightFocus President and CEO Stacy Pagos Haller. “The start of a new year is the perfect time to schedule your annual eye exam and encourage friends and loved ones to do the same.”
