Dr. Guy Eakin:
Hi! I'm Dr. Guy Eakin; I'm going to give some tips for care giving of people suffering from the devastating and debilitating effects of Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's currently affects more than 5 million Americans, and as baby boomers continue to age, we will all begin to see more people affected by the disease. Providing care-giving for those with Alzheimer's is an enormous task; that is both physically and emotionally exhausting.
Some simple ways to reduce the burden of Alzheimer's are to seek help through government services or adult daycare. Take care of legal and financial planning as soon as possible and control caregiver stress with support groups friends and family. Create a safe environment and establish a predictable daily routine. As Alzheimer's disease progresses, caregivers must adapt to constant changes and they need to be prepared for a time when their loved ones no longer know them.
