BrightFocus' sister organization in Belgium, Stichting voor Alzheimer Onderzoek (SAO) / Fondation pour la Recherche sur la Maladie d'Alzheimer (FMRA), is a nonprofit entity founded in 1995 and operating since 1998. It relies upon donations and legacies from the general public to achieve its goals. The foundation's primary purpose is to support basic, clinical, and diagnostic scientific research regarding the causes and possible treatments of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. SAO/FMRA also provides the public with information about this brain disease.
Since 1998 SAO/FRMA, which is the largest private funder of Alzheimer's research in Belgium, has financed 65 scientific projects for a total sum of more than four million Euros.
The organization's president and managing director is Wilfried Nys. Toots Thielemans, the iconic jazz musician, serves as its spokesperson.
