Older adults have an increased risk of certain types of mental health symptoms.
Anxiety: uneasiness of the mind caused by fear of unknown. Symptoms of anxiety include:
- low energy
- trouble sleeping, fatigue
- depression, helplessness, isolation
- appetite changes, lack of nutrition
- PSTD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
- physical symptoms; gastrointestinal
Lack of social stimulation can increase the risk of depression and cognitive impairment. Aim to maintain social connections. Some options to think about include: video conferencing with family and friends, going for walk while adhering to physical distancing recommendations, calling a loved on on the telephone, joining online support groups.

Practice mindfulness to help your body and mind get to a calmer place during uncertain times. Tips to follow:
- breathing exercise
- create a structured routine
- implement daily exercise
- eat balanced nutritious meals
Consult a doctor before starting a new regimen; modify for personal needs and goals
Increased access to telemedicine: You can see your doctor from your home. People who have visual impairment, or mobility impairment will be able to have access to their health care provider via telemedicine which usually includes video/audio conferencing. Most doctors’ offices are helping patients set up their device at home and connect.
