BrightFocus provides research funds for U.S. and international researchers pursuing pioneering research leading to greater understanding, prevention, and treatment of glaucoma.

Scope: Preference is made for exciting pilot projects that would not, at their present stage, be competitive for large government or industry awards. Please note that applicants to the NGR program are encouraged to apply for funding to create tools that would benefit all investigators in the field, including animal models of disease, or cell lines. While prior awardees are welcome to submit new proposals following the conclusion of the previously-sponsored project, the new proposals should not be extensions of the prior project. Additionally, Postdoctoral Fellows may be listed as Co-Principal Investigator. 

How to Apply

To start a new application and upload attachments, you must use our SmartSimple application portal to apply online.

  1. You will need to register your organization. Upon doing so, a system-defined password will be emailed to you, along with a link to the BrightFocus' SmartSimple application portal (

  2. Next, you will need to change the system-defined password to one of your own choosing.

  3. Once you create and submit the new password, you will be taken to the application portal where you will be given step-by-step instructions on how to proceed with the application process.
    Note: If you have issues accessing or navigating BrightFocus’ SmartSimple application portal using Microsoft Internet Explorer, then switch to another web browser, such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.

  4. Attachments are required and must be submitted through the application portal. The final page of the attachment templates should be signed and returned to BrightFocus as specified in the instructions.
