Grant Details

BrightFocus provides research funds for U.S. domestic as well as international researchers pursuing pioneering research leading to greater understanding, prevention, and treatment of age-related macular degeneration.

Letter of Intent deadline: July 03, 2019, 5:00 PM EST

Proposal Length: Two-page description of the proposed research

Full Proposal deadline: October 10, 2019, 5:00 PM EST (By Invitation only)

Amount: $100,000 per year

Duration: 2 years maximum (total value $200,000)

Scope: The goal of the program is to accelerate advances in fundamental and translational research in age-related macular degeneration, to understand the mechanisms underlying the etiology and pathogenesis of macular degeneration and to develop innovative approaches to better diagnose, prevent or delay the progress of the disease. Preference is made for exciting pilot projects that would not, at their present stage, be competitive for large government or industry awards. Typically these awards are made to early stage investigators, or to more established investigators who are proposing particularly innovative research. Additionally, Postdoctoral Fellows may be listed as Co-Principal Investigator.

How to Apply

To start a new application and upload attachments, you must use our SmartSimple application portal to apply online.

  1. You will need to register your organization. Upon doing so, a system-defined password will be emailed to you, along with a link to the BrightFocus' SmartSimple application portal (http://brightfocus.smartsimple.us).

  2. Next, you will need to change the system-defined password to one of your own choosing.

  3. Once you create and submit the new password, you will be taken to the application portal where you will be given step-by-step instructions on how to proceed with the application process.
    Note: If you have issues accessing or navigating BrightFocus’ SmartSimple application portal using Microsoft Internet Explorer, then switch to another web browser, such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.

  4. Attachments are required and must be submitted through the application portal. The final page of the attachment templates should be signed and returned to BrightFocus as specified in the instructions.
