  • Supervisor: Controller

    Date: August 2, 2023

    Position Description:

    The Staff Accountant reports to the Controller and will be responsible for month-end close, accounts payable, accounts reconciliations, employee expense reporting, property tax returns filing, and affiliate company tenants billing. S/he will apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to recording, analyzing, and reporting business transactions of the organization. 

    The candidate will also perform hands on month end and year end close transaction entries and help with the Annual audits and other tasks assigned by the Controller. The position requires good communication skills, attention to details and some problem-solving skills. Sage Intacct proficiency is a must. This is a full-time, exempt position and it is based at our head office in Clarksburg, Maryland. The company operates a hybrid work policy.

    Duties, Responsibilities and Functions:

    • Create, process, maintain, review, and analyze various financial transactions affecting the general ledger in accordance with GAAP and other regulations.
    • Reconcile assigned accounts.
    • Monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial closing.
    • Process direct mail transactions coding and allocations.
    • Annual Financial audit support.
    • Annual Tax Returns support
    • Assist in special projects as assigned.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree or higher is required; Accounting or Finance is preferred.
    • Proficiency in Sage Intacct Software is a must.
    • SAP Concur experience is a plus.
    • Intermediate to Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
    • Minimum of 3-years relevant experience 
    • Experience in General Ledger, Accounts Payables, Accounts Receivables, and Fixed Assets
    • Strong communication, analytical, problem-solving skills.
    • Results oriented self-starter with strong initiative.

  • Supervisor: Director, Integrated Marketing and Communications (remote)

    Classification: Full-time, exempt

    Position Description

    Reporting to the Director of Integrated Marketing and Communications, the Content and Communications Manager is responsible for writing, publishing, optimizing, and organizing original content that supports BrightFocus’ mission and broader communications strategy and content calendar across channels. The Manager will manage the omnichannel content calendar for the Integrated Marketing and Communications Department and produce written and other content, such as website articles, landing pages, press releases, publications, and brochures, as well as visual graphics, videos, event marketing, e-mail newsletters, social media content, media engagement, and other communications projects as needed. The Manager will liaise with numerous stakeholders across the organization, including the Fundraising, Scientific Affairs, and Strategic Partnerships departments, to support strategic goals and objectives.  

    Nonprofit BrightFocus Foundation reaches hundreds of millions of people each year through its efforts to provide public information in the fight against mind and sight diseases. BrightFocus funds groundbreaking global research and provides expert information to defeat Alzheimer’s, macular degeneration, and glaucoma and has invested nearly $290 million in research to date; the Foundation is currently supporting a $74 million global portfolio of more than 270 projects across 16 countries. 

    Duties, Responsibilities, and Functions

    • In partnership with the Director, Integrated Marketing and Communications, and VP, Integrated Marketing and Communications, manage and produce content for digital channels, including writing, editing, gaining approvals, proactively tracking deadlines, and maintaining quality control for content across channels, including websites, landing pages, microsites, public information programs/events, video, audio, and email, in adherence to SEO and U/X best practices as well as AP Style and BrightFocus editorial guidelines.

    • Maintain a holistic editorial calendar spanning bilingual (English/Spanish) paid, owned, and earned channels, including strategic campaigns, website content, publications, paid ads, brochures, email, video/audio content, and social media.  

    • Collaborate with the Director, Integrated Marketing and Communications and Director, Social Media to monitor progress and metrics of content through consistent tracking, monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting, and proactive deadline management. 

    • Work across departments to track upcoming news and trending topics, scientist profiles, and scientific breakthroughs, and recommend channels for amplification. Share regular content updates across departments.  

    • In collaboration with Director, Integrated Marketing and Communications and freelance writers, edit articles for readability and SEO and select images to ensure that BrightFocus’ scientific research impact points are clearly conveyed. 

    • Summarize and synthesize the work of BrightFocus research for use in fundraising, digital, and promotional projects; ensure fact sheets, disease information, and impact stats are current and used properly.  

    • Assist in developing new resources and managing inventory for public engagement, including fact sheets, videos, researcher profiles, and other engaging content.  

    • Write and produce emails in HubSpot as needed in collaboration with the Development team and multiple stakeholders across the organization.  

    • Provide marketing and communications support for educational programs, events, scientific conferences, community outreach, and other communications efforts for BrightFocus and its research programs.  

    • Conduct media research in Meltwater for all press release and news announcements; develop targeted media lists of contacts based on PR and campaign goals. 

    • Assist the Director, Social Media and Director, Integrated Marketing and Communications with the development of an optimized influencer and video/audio content strategy in support of established social media KPIs; help organize audio and video content.  

    • Assist with the scheduling of social media posts to reflect approved editorial content and calendars.  

    • Champion best practices in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility  
      communications, ensuring that digital materials are formatted to meet the highest ADA and low vision requirements and are reflective of all audiences; make recommendations on how to enhance DEAI communications and accessibility efforts. 

    • Other duties as assigned. 

    Requirements 

    • Minimum of 4 years’ communications, public relations, journalism, digital marketing, and/or content marketing experience; non-profit experience strongly preferred. 

    • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, public relations, advertising, or similar field; interest in nonprofit, science, research and/or health marketing and communications  

    • Superior writing, communications, and editing skills, including the ability to write for multiple audiences. (Three writing samples and a cover letter are required to be considered) 

    • Exceptional attention to detail and writing, editing, fact-checking, and proofreading skills. 

    • Google Analytics, SEO, Drupal, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, HubSpot/CRM, multimedia asset management and digital project management experience. 

    • Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills; ability to effectively interact with cross-departmental colleagues and external vendors. 

    • Strong project management skills with the ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple projects against deadlines and deliver approved content on time. Working knowledge of Asana a plus. 

    • Experience with media and influencer relations, media research, and database management, such as Muck Rack or Cision. 

    • Commitment to the mission and values of BrightFocus with specific knowledge of its distinguished research programs, characteristics, goals, and accomplishments. 

    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously. 

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a part of a hybrid/remote team in a professional and collegial manner. 

    • Ability to travel to BrightFocus Foundation headquarters approx. 3x a year for in-person professional development and team meetings.
