Details

Levels of TNF, a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine that has both neurotoxic and neuroprotective effects, are low in normal adult brains. However, TNF levels have been found to be significantly elevated in the brain fluid of patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) who progress to develop AD. Therefore, the overall aim of Dr. Tansey's studies is to identify the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which TNF participates in AD pathology. Completion of these studies should provide new and critical information about the role of TNF in AD progression. Results may also help determine if currently available anti-TNF therapies might be feasibly modified, or new ones developed, for treating AD patients during specific therapeutic windows to slow progression of this devastating disease.
