Macular Degeneration and Low Vision Awareness Macular degeneration is a major cause of visual impairment in the United States and around the world. Macular degeneration is a major cause of irreversible vision loss in the United States and around the world. As many as 11 million Americans have some form of macular degeneration. We urge everyone to regularly get comprehensive eye exams.

Through our Macular Degeneration Research (MDR) program, BrightFocus Foundation is working to find ways to treat, diagnose, and prevent macular degeneration. MDR supports the best research worldwide through an annual competitive grant program to support top scientists who are pursing innovative, cutting-edge ideas.
