Dr. Guy Eakin:
Hello, I'm Dr. Guy Eakin and today I'm talking about Alzheimer disease. A devastating and debilitating disease that robs people of their memory. It is a progressive and incurable brain disorder. Currently more than 5 million Americans are affected by Alzheimer's and another thousand are diagnosed with the disease everyday that's one every 66 seconds.*
As America's baby boomers continue to age, experts predict that more than 15 million Americans will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's by the year 2050. This progressive brain disorder creates a major economic drain on the US economy with over $100 billion a year in healthcare cost and loss caregiver and patient wages. The emotional and physical toll on families as they struggle with around-the-clock care giving is enormous.
In this video series I'll explain how Alzheimer's affects the brain, then I'll discuss symptoms and diagnoses. I'll talk about treatments available for Alzheimer's and I'll also give some helpful tips for caring for someone leaving with disease. Lastly, I'll tell you about the latest research and advancements toward the cure.
