When my daughter asked me to come to her school to talk about my job, I wasn't sure if “clinician scientist” would be very interesting to her classmates.
But when I told them that my research might prevent their grandparents from losing their sight, that got their attention.
I'm working with the BrightFocus Foundation to find a cure for macular degeneration, a debilitating eye disease.
Macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss for people over 60, affecting over 11 million Americans.
It's important to let young people know how to take care of their sight.
I told the children about brightfocus.org/kids, a website created just for them...where families learn about the disease, using interactive games…stories and other activities.
